Hi all,
like I allready said in the Backyard forum, this board is going to change in the near future.
I thought it would be a good idea to make a FAQ thread on the new board (sticky and closed off course) with a few simple questions and answers that keep coming back.
So, what questions you think we should put in that thread?
If I use one of your question/answers, you will get a thank you credit ;D

Here are some questions, I can't be arsed to write the answers right now because I'm really drunk, maybe someone could write definitive answers to them with me?
These are the sorts of questions that seem to crop up regularly here, elsewhere and some that I pondered when I started on PT.
How many tracks/plug-ins can I run on my computer?
What plug-ins come with the digi002, the digi 002r or the M-box?
Are the 002 pre-amps focusrite?
Where can I get a cracked version of ... ...?
My P4 CPU usage goes upto red and I've only got a few tracks and a d-verb going. What's happening?
How do I get Reason to work with Pro Tools?
What does "dither" mean and when should I apply it?
How can I get my tracks as loud as commercial CDs?

Where can I purchase Pro Tools in my country? We could each look up the best suppliers in our country and keep the faq frequently updated.
oh and I guess some forum specific faqs would be useful too:
Who moderates the forum?
What are the forum rules? I mean can we swear at each other?
Why isn't there a microphone or Cubase forum here?

I'll start work on some of the answers tomorrow because I have a mighty hangover. Although I'm a technically newbie myself I suppose. ;D

yeah, I'm also a bit tired after a weekend with not much sleep:).
Once the new forum is going strong, I do think of putting on a 'recording technique' or mixing forum. But lets first see how the changes are going to be:).
Next week I'm going to reveil the new URL. You can always guess ;D

I think the FAQ section should be a locked place that you (Brett) could post a FAQ question once a week...or once every couple weeks. kinda like the Administrator's outreach to the members. and if it was locked, we wouldn't have random conversations start up about non-releated FAQs (like the whole homosexual rights conversation we started up a bit ago). good ideas already though

Now that wouldn't be fair, would it? ;D I hoped to reveal it now (the webspace company said it would probably become active from this evening), but I haven't heared from them yet. So a little bit of patience...

are we going to start fresh...or are you going to be able to copy all these threads over?

I'm afraid that is going to be the bad news: I'm afraid we are gonna have to give up our threads:(.
But don't worry, on the other hand we will get a brand new forum, a good URL, a good server and we'll rule Pro Tools forum world:).
I wil try to keep your post counts though;)
The new forum will take a while, but in the meantime I'll just redirect the main URL (that is hopefully coming on of these days)

How many tracks/plug-ins can I run on this type of computer? What computer should I get? The upper limit of voicable tracks in Pro Tools LE is 32. Even average modern PCs and Macs can playback 32 tracks but things start getting tricky when you add more load to your processor in the form of EQ, effects, automation virtual instruments etc. If you are planning on recording lots of tracks you should really aim to get the most powerful computer you can afford on the platform you feel most comfortable with. If you like PCs don't feel like you have to run PT on a Mac (and viceverca). Check that any computer you buy or plan to build is Digidesign tested, otherwise you could find yourself with problems further down the line. You can find the compatibility documents here: www.digidesign.com/compato/ It's recommended that you have your system data on a different drive or partition to your audio files and at least a gig of RAM. You will need XP if you are running a PC and it's best to optimise windows for audio. Here's a great website that tells you all the XP tweaks. www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php What plug-ins come with the digi002, the digi 002r or the M-box? There's a chart here: www.digidesign.com/products/bundle/ which shows what is currently included in LE systems. Are the 002 pre-amps focusrite? No, but they are still rather good. The M-box preamps are focusrite but of a comparable quality to the 002 pre amps. Where can I get a cracked version of ... ...? This isn't the place to look for cracked software, don't bother asking. My P4 CPU usage goes up in to red and I've only got a few tracks and a d-verb going. What's happening? This is down to an issue called "denormalization". Basically the d-verb can cause P4s try to calculate very small numbers over and over again until the poor thing gets a little confused. You can get round the problem by inserting a dither plug-in before the d-reverb plug-in. You may find that other plug-ins (particularly wrapped VST plugs) also cause the same problem and it's best to try inserting a dither before you start inserting your fist in to the computer. How do I get Reason to work with Pro Tools? Someone else can answer this. What does "dither" mean and when should I apply it? ditto
